Life gives us no guarantees. My life has definitely unfolded so differently than I could have ever imagined at any given stage of it. And thank God for that.
In the process of loosing everything and nothing going according to my plans, I have learnt to trust life. I have learnt that everything else except our inner resources can disappear at any given moment. We can’t place our sense of safety anywhere or on anything outside of us. This is very scary for the ego. The ego would love to control everything.
Life is an absolute mystery, and that is extremely scary as long as we feel we are living in a dangerous and volatile Universe. There is this sense that anything bad could happen any moment, so it’s better to accumulate safe and secure things around us, and hold onto them for dear life.
But that’s how we miss the magic. The mysterious inexplainable miracle unfolding in front of our very eyes, that is life. We can’t experience that AND simultaneously fear the unknown and hold onto things. Those two things are mutually exclusive. Either we jump into the unknown or we protect ourselves and our lives at all cost.
The Universe is always extending us an invitation to experience love, peace, and miracles. Those can only be experienced in the present moment. If we are too busy safeguarding ourselves from what might happen tomorrow or next year, or playing events from the past on repeat in our minds, we will never experience the present. The only moment we ever got is now, here.
A relationship with the present moment is a relationship with the mystery. When all your attention is in the here and now, you can’t possibly be worrying about next week. It is very daring to trust life enough to know you are held and taken care of. You have absolutely no guarantees about what is going to happen the next moment, but you trust yourself so much that you know that you can get through it. You also know that everything happens for a higher reason and that every experience can be turned into empowerment and healing.
A sense of safety, empowerment, and protection always needs to come from within, first and foremost. It cannot come from your bank account, engagement ring, pension, steady paycheck, or fully paid mortage. Those things can provide us a FEELING of safety, but they have nothing to do with true safety. All the material things can be lost. Yet once you have established a steady connection to your soul and inner power, and move from a place of deep self-trust, you become capable of facing anything and everything. You dance with the mystery and are delighted by the unknown.
A relationship with the mystery makes you fearless. You know that life is inherently safe, because you are a soul, and souls are immortal and all-capable. There is learning and lessons, and while those are seemingly out of your control, you know that they are orchestrated by a higher power for your highest good. You can jump into any experience, and the more you trust it, the more life is meeting all of your needs.
What seems horrible to the ego, is exquisite for the soul. The soul doesn’t want the answers or certainties. It wants to feel, experience, and be surprised. It knows it is inherently safe and held by this experience that we call life. It is in love with the ride, the not-knowing, and the eternal mystery of existence itself.
